Using deft movement on the edge of the box, Uruguayan international Valverde gently defeated a defender before quietly finding the bottom corner of the net in the 80th minute.

The 14-time champions put up a lacklustre effort and, up until Valverde's goal, had only mustered one attempt on goal, while Leipzig had plenty of chances but lacked the finishing touch.

In extra time, Carlo Ancelotti's team secured the win thanks to a goal from substitute Asensio, who scored after Toni Kroos set him up.

"The game was excellent. We were a little hurt in the first half," Ancelotti stated following the game.

"We wanted to maintain control of the game before adding a little extra pressure in the second half, and we achieved just that. We needed to play with a little bit more vigour.

"It was a very controlled first half. The front of them is perilous, and we didn't want to take any chances. We've won the first two games, and after the break we have another game [against Shakhtar]."
